Will the HD upscaling feature of Philips dvd player work even if i only use a regular tv?
I purchased just couple of days ago a Div-X dvd player. the brand is Philips and model is DVP5965. It has hd upscaling features and usb support and divx ultra. Well i was amazed by how it improves the picture quality of any video i play. I compared it with the video quality of my PC (I ran the same videos simultaneously to compare) and i was like WOW! The colors are richer, and the quality of the pic is very good in my new dvd player. but i am curious about using hdmi feature since i haven't tried this feature before, and it is turned off in my menu maybe because i don't have an hdmi cable (it wasn't supplied on my purchase of this dvd player). I want to purchase it because i've heard and read on the internet comments about how the hd upscaling has further improved GREATLY the video quality. But the problem is I don't have an HDTV (Widescreen flat TV or whatever). I'm only using an average TV. It's not flat, it's not lcd or plasma.....i repeat it is just an AVERAGE tv. ????

If you don't have an HDTV, then it probably also does not have an HDMI input. So even if you had the HDMI cable, you'd have nothing to connect it to!
Up-converting is nice, but its not a night-and-day difference generally. But just getting a newer/better TV might improve your DVD picture even more than using the HDMI connection!
So if you want to take the picture quality further, buy a new HDTV with an HDMI input (2 is better!) and get a cable from an online vendor line monoprice.com (don't buy overpriced cables from Best Buy or others unless you are in a massive rush to get started!) HD upscaling can never work with an ordinary (or conventional, if you want) TV. HD works only for HD-ready or capable receiver.
