Will my current subwoofer work with this new Surround Sound system?

What do you mean work with?

Are you intending to add this as additional sub? Or as a replacement for what is there?

I surmise that you want to add base to the system and think this is the best way to do it. Further, if you do add it as a additional sub you will hear base and only base. More often than not these cheap little systems ramp up the treble and base to sell the system. They are to make noise and not to accurately reproduce sound ( especially if it is from Sony ).

But since you have decided to go ahead with this kind of set up here is how you make it sound OK. Base management. Set the subs close to one another and set the crossover for each to the included for higher base freqs and the MTX to the lower freqs available. Have no overlap.

If you are wanting to add dimension to the sound stage then I suggest you ditch this HTIB for a separates receiver/speaker setup and have full range tower speakers and use you existing MTX for base reinforcement. Yes everything should work fine, you have a receiver which undoubtedly has a subwoofer pre-out and a powered sub so just hook a sub cable between the 2 and you're all set. yes, should work fine. Here is what I would do since I like mega bass in home theater. Use a Y-adapter from the output of the receiver and then send the signal to each of the subs. Put some good rubber feet on the Sony sub and place it on top of the MTX sub. This placement will minimize the cancellation effect from overlapping settings. Flapjack is right to be concerned about this effect but I have read that one can get away with this and I have experimented with it in home theater rooms at a store I worked at. Additionally, the effect of bi-amping big speakers effectively creates dual subwoofers. In my main home theater I have two 10" NHT subs and one 12" M&K sub (redemption of spiff points and winning one sales contest). My main L&R speakers have 10" woofers. I set them to large in the receiver's menu and send the LFE to them as well as to the subs. I LOVE it even if it is overkill. It's fun. So I say try it with both subs at the same settings and see what happens. Then try Flapjack's suggestion. Go with whichever sounds best to you.
