yes.but it wont look as nice. All DVD's are recorded in progressive scan (480p). So using a progressive scan DVD player (which, by the way, only outputs progressive scan if you use component video or, if you have it, HDMI) will improve your picture quality, if it's hooked up correctly, and only if you have a progressive scan TV (EDTV or HDTV). there's no such thing as a progressive scan dvd. Progressive scanning is a way of reproducing the image on a dvd (or any image for that matter). The DVD itself is not progressive, there is a certain number of information on the DVD that can be read and displayed progressive or interlaced from your progressive dvd player to your progressive-capable TV. You have raised an interesting question. The image on a commercial DVD originates in "progressive scan" mode; that is, each frame of the DVD picture contains 480 lines. Early DVD players outputted this in interlace mode so that the signal would be compatible with all TVs. When progressive-mode DVD players came out, they did not get the image directly from the disc, instead they de-interlaced the image electronically. (For material from film sources, this can be done completely accurately.) I would think that the DVD-writing program (i-dvd or other) would put a progressive scan image on the DVD, since that is the standard, and that it would do this from either progressive or interlaced material. However, I am not sure about this, and although I have made many DVDs from Final Cut, I never paid much attention to this.
