Will a U.K. dvd work in an american player?
My penpal in England wantst to send me a DVD of her favorite movie, but neither of us are sure it will work in my machine. I have a Maganvox MWD200F, but we're not sure if a U.K. release would work in a U.S.A. machine.

It will if you play it in a pc Look on the bottom of the DVD player, it should show what region it is meant for. If the DVD is for the same region it will play, if it isn't it won't. More than likely it will NOT work. There are a couple of issues, DVDs are made for specific regions. I think the US is Region 1. England is not in this region. Some bootleg dvds are advertized as working in all regions but I'd be very sketical of that. There are two different formats used, something like NTSC (used in the US) and PAL, used in England. If you were making your own DVD the software would ask you which format do you want to use to create it so they are definitely not compatible. Perhaps she can tell you the name of the movie and you can find it fairly cheaply at Amazon or EBay (probably close to the price of the postage for the DVD from England to here. Hope this helps.
