Why doesnt my new dvd player read my dvd-r's?

I have recently boughten a new Sony dvd/vhs combo.This thing was suppose to play everything including dvd'-r's.Evertime i burn off a movie from my pc the darn dvd player wont read it.I have been told that Sony used some cheap a** lasers in their dvd/vhs combos.Is this true?Is there some other reason this thing wont read my dvd-r's.I thought Sony was suppose to be one of the best?!?

take it back and buy a cheap dvd player. I have the cheapest one they sell, $35 and it plays ANYTHING. I had the same problem with a Sony, and I took it back to the store, even though it was open, I exchanged it and got a JVC and it works great. are you recording in multisession mode? try turning off any options that allow for you to add to the current disc.

are you burning the movie in mpeg2 or in AVI/divx/xvid/etc format? for the player to read it it needs to be converted into the DVD mpeg format. newer dvd players play at ever faster speeds so it just may be that your older dvds are just recorded at slower speeds than can be picked up by your brand new player. When you hit play does it skip a lot? This is a dead give away. Find out if you can adjust the speed of your new player or re- record the problem discs at speeds more compatible with your new player. Hope this helps. Try using different media. Some DVD players just don't play nice with some media. Ritek is probably the cheapest media out there (it's worth a try), and I've never had any problems with any DVD player while using Memorex media.
