Why does my surround sound receiver shuts down when playing 5.1 dvd movies?
The system is a Philips surround systme 750 watts wombined in all 5 chanels. This system is about 4 years old, but when I bought it was advanced technology. comverting video and has optical audio.
Answer:
Check your system for short circuits. If it's only happening in 5.1, thoroughly check the rear and center channels. A short will shut down the system to protect the amplifier.
Also, it could be a heat problem, especially since it's 4 years old.
Remove the top cover, and clean it out with a can of compressed air. Make sure the furniture it is in allows for ample ventilation. Don't put anything on top of the receiver unit.
While you have the cover off to clean it, turn the unit upside down and shake it just a bit (DON'T shake if it has a built in CD or DVD player) to dislodge anything that may have fallen in to the case, which might be causing a short.

UNPLUG IT FROM THE AC WALL OUTLET BEFORE OPENING THE CASE! (Unplugging speakers and audio/video sources from the unit isn't necessary)

Sounds like your speaker protection is kicking in , which causes your receiver to shut down.
Cut back on the volume and everything should be fine.
