Why does my home theather system turn off when i am turning the volume up?

Whenever i turn up the volume of my home theather system to a certain range, it just shuts off. I have to leave it to normal levels so it wont shut off. This also happens when the system is in radio mode and whe i turn the volume up higher, the system turns off and i have to restart the sytem again in order to hear the sound again. Could this be my speaker wires? I had to replace the original wires bought regular speaker wires from radio shack. Could the new wires not handle the power of the sound system therefore shuttting down?

More than likely you have damaged the amp. and the receiver is turning a protection mode on. You could also disconnect and reconnect all you connections. If that doesn't work you need to get it serviced or replace it. mine did that b4 it died. how old is it the amp could be going out. mixing speakers with different power levels also makes that happen. those systems are made to run witht he speakers that came with it you have a short. look in your speaker wire first if its not there take it to get repaired or just open it yourself and go to town!! It sounds likely that your system is tripping out, i have been having the same problem with my stereo. you may have to turn down the volume coming from the source if you have say a DVD player or PC plugged into it, this may help.

I would also invest in the best speaker cable you can afford. This will help with the signal and power feedback to your system. Hope this helps mate. All the answers I see are good ideas. It could also be that the amplifier is overheating. Make sure you have adequate clearance around the bottom, sides, top and rear of the amplifier to get cool air circulating. When you turn it up loud enough it has a protection circuit in it so it wont blow up the receiver and mess everything up. It does this on purpose. Most of the time if it shuts off at a low volume its the amp in the receiver that's messed up. hope that helps. My tivo remote switches the inputs on my receiver. It would click off the speakers, and then a couple of seconds later they would click back on. And then a couple days ago, it wouldn't play any sound at all, and now I have about $600 worth of speakers that I cant use.this sucks.
