Why does my Yamaha RS-V550 receiver shut off with load bangs in audio?
3 - If you have a separate DVD player that is connected or can be connected, try watching a movie and cranking it up to see if it happens on another input. If it doesn't happen then it is a problem with that specific input, but it could be related to the next point.
Go into the PS3's audio settings and make sure that the audio is set to Dolby Digital PCM, that may allow for sound to come through your receiver properly. In some cases you may need to put it on Bitsream instead based on the receiver. Try both. If neither one of those gives you Dolby Digital audio, connect a Fiber Optic Cable along with the HDMI to the receiver, and on the receiver change the audio for your input from HDMI to Optical. That will fix your surround problem.
