Why do dvd's purchased in u.s.a. work sometimes in europe.?

Most DVD players in Europe are either multi region out of the box or are easily made multi region. Most US DVDs are region coded 1 and are in NTSC format. Most for EU are in different region codes and in PAL format. But some DVDs are totally free of region codes. Because sometimes a DVD does not have a regional code requirement encoded in it. These regional codes are used to prevent copy piracy.The USA code is "1". Your either using an uncoded DVD or an All Region DVD player.
Also sometimes DVD's will be coded for 2 or more regions, so that they don't have to make more than one recording for the same shipping date.
DVD's and DVD players are coded by region. The players will only play DVD's from it's own region.
They code the DVD's to protect studio's profits. -They don't want someone to be able to buy a DVD where it costs less and resell it in another country, nor do they want someone to be able to send a DVD to a country where the movie hasn't been released yet.
REGION 1 - USA, Canada
REGION 2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 - S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (Mexico incl.)
REGION 5 - Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 - China
REGION 7 - Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 - Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL - Uncoded, can be played Worldwide

PAL is the dominant format in the World for analog television broadcasting and video display. For your purpose it means almost all movies not recorded in (or for) the U.S. won't play on U.S. equipment (DVD, and VHS players, TV's)
PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.
