surround sound experience like at the cinemas, or do you want

a system to play audio and video in stereo, or do you just want

a system that plays audio only?

- Your Basic Audio/Video System: This comes with a stereo

receiver, a DVD player, plus 2 speakers (and a powered sub-

woofer if you want add low bass). You will need a TV.

- Your Basic Music System: This comes with a stereo integra-

ted amplifier (or a stereo receiver if you want an AM/FM radio

too), a CD player, and 2 speakers.

The first choice is recommended if you watch a lot of newer

movies and you want the movie theater experience. The second

choice is good if you watch older movies (as well as newer

ones), watch a lot of cable and local television, and if your family

plays video games. The third choice is for music and radio

listening only. You can add a turntable if you have records too.

Your home theater nowadays will include around 5 speakers and one sub...with a receiver that will decode the way it is mixed in the movie..Where as a stereo system would be just 2 speakers and no decoding... A music system would only need to include a stereo amplifier (2 channels), a pair of speakers and a music source such as a CD player or FM tuner. A typical home theater might include a surround sound receiver (5 channels), 5 speakers (Front left/right, Rear left/right and center), a subwoofer (for low frequency bass effects), at least one audiovideo source such as a DVD player, cable or satellite receiver and some type of video display (Plasma, LCD, front or rear projection or other type). Any decent hometheater system should make a fine music system. There's only one advantage to a music only system, since there are fewer components to buy you can use the same amount of money to buy better equipment.

For a family of five I think a hometheatre is definitely the way to go. How you put it together depends entirely on your circumstances. If you have a good TV, DVD player and a stereo system then you could start by buying a surround sound reciever and another pair of speakers. Add a center channel and subwoofer later then upgrade to a high definition plasma or LCD display. As equipment is replaced it could be used to build a second hometheater system for a bedroom or den. Believe me, the fun never ends.
