Which one is better, a mini hifi with 5.1 output or a home theater?

Neither is very good since most home theater solutions that come in a box are for crap. What I suggest is that you invest in a pair of JBL LSR6328P Studio Monitors, a JBL MP418SP subwoofer, and a good receiver (such as the JBL SDP-40) that supports surround sound. You will get better sound out of a pair of studio monitors and a good receiver than any non Bose 5.1 system or Home Theater in a box. Then as time goes on, when you want to expand your system you've already gotten the most important part of the system, and the rest can be added fairly cheaply. Yes I'm biased towards JBL, but I have a pair of antique JBL Studio Monitors that I inherited from my parents, they were made in like the 70's and they still have the power to bring the cops to my door all by themselves with only a cheap sony piece of junk reciever. Home theater; if you have the space for the speakers and large screen tv. home theater by far, and there are alot better systems than jbl
