Which is the correct way to hook up surround sound?

I just bought a new surround sound and in the past, i was connecting left and right audio from the DVD to the Surround sound. Just recently I noticed that the DVD player and the surround sound have one cable which controls all audio. Which connection is the best? (I also noticed that the movies really sound like Dolby Digital surround now...)

Your DVD player should have a digital audio output and your Surround Sound receiver a digital audio input. These inputs/outputs are of two different flavors TOSLink (short for Toshiba Link) aka Optical and S/PDIF (an "Orange RCA" plug). Either way it's PCM digital audio of all the channels (left, right, front, etc), and of various standards (DTS, Dolby, etc), depending on the source material.

I recommend using the optical inputs/outputs if your equipment has both. Once you have the digital audio output of the DVD player hooked to the digital audio input of your SS receiver, then wire up your speakers as you normally would from the receiver's outputs (left, right, center, bass, left-rear, right-rear).

The best connection for most equipment is through the digital cable (either coaxial or optical) Depending on both your DVD player and receiver.
