Which gives better sound quality, Digital coax, HDMI or Optical?
The title says it all really. Just looking at setting up 5.1 for DVD's etc and am exploring my options. I would be very interested to see what other people think on this subject, please no one-word answers, explanations are always appreciated ;)

The absolute best is a once decoded signal.Not one that is decoded and re-coded to pass along from device to device, like optical, hdmi, or even coax. Also these digital types of connection require that both the source and the amp support the format.
With those givens I say none of the above to your question. Balanced discrete outputs give the best uncompressed sound, given that it is the proper cable. Discrete RCA's are next.
In a pinch I will use coax for runs 1M or less and optical for runs over 1M. for reasons that are a little complex to describe here. But these are my own and a few others findings.
I haven't gotten a HDMI device to work with the higher bandwidth formats yet. So I can't fully evaluate the performance, but give it a few years and I think it will work out when HDMI 2.0 is released and manufactures have had time to work out the software bugs. I find that HDMI works the best when it's coming from my home theater system for audio. However I find digital coaxil is better running from my comcast hd box for audio so I use
