Which dvd player should I buy, HD DVD or Blu-Ray?

neither right now it's still too early & they are both able to play standard dvd's wait a yr or so & then you'll have a good idea on which to buy but as for now blu-ray is losing the battle right now..hd dvd playback performance has been awesome & blu-ray has had some playback issues with it's picture quality not as consistant as hd-dvd but we will see when more of the other companies with present their players later this yr if the outcome is still the same . Non yet. Wait till one format becomes dominant, or at least till the prices go down. I would wait and see what shakes free, if you commit too early you might be left out in the cold. It is too early to tell which one will come out on top.
The only advantage I see right now is the fact the the Blue-Ray is backwards compatible, meaning it will play any DVDs you have bought , HD-DVD is not backwards compatible. If you are going to buy one now, get the HD-DVD. Prices are half of Blu-Ray and the image is actually better. You can make most of your money back by selling it later. And you'll want to sell it once Dual-Format players come out.
Plus, there are twice as many movies for HD-DVD. whaqt makes you think you can use either of them ?

These are two technical solutions to the same problem. if it fixes the problem, you don't really care how so make sure you can see the difference and that the media is available.
As it's quite rare now and my tv does not do 1080p, i just wait. Go with the HD DVD. Both units will play standard DVDs, and I think Sony's Blu-Ray will loose out just like the Betamax did twenty years ago. As others noted, you should wait a bit to see which type dominates the market first. Even with the same movie you still can't do a proper comparison. All the studios are still learning how to author the next generation DVD's. HD-DVD in general has a better chance of being authored than Blu-Ray since it has been out sooner. Until BOTH formats are more mature, a straight comparison is moot.
