Where to mount ceiling speakers?
I have a center-hall colonial, so when you walk in my front door, there is a center hall that is open to the second floor. Up on the second floor I am going to install 2 JBL speakers (easy access from attic). Where would be an ideal spot for these. Would they be diagonal from each other? One toward front of house, one toward back? Maybe both on same side?
Unfortunately, the owner's manual does not give suggestions. Shame on them for costing me points :)
This is just for "background music" in my home, family room/kitchen are in back of house, so music won't be heard back there.

Basically you want to spread out the sound evenly into the area you are trying to get music. It's hard to say without actually seeing your house, but probably I would put one one in the center of the front half and one in the center of the back half. The speakers would be lined up but spread out. u might want to get a surrond sound system to better spread the sound through out the room If it's just for background music, then technically placement is not important. You're not going to get much (if any) stereo image off of that sort of system, so you're best off installing them in the general areas in which you socialize.
Honestly, if I were you, I'd see if you can set it up to play in mono (there should be some kind of setting on the amplifier that allows this) and then put one speaker in the front and one in the back on the house (living room and dining room, perhaps). This would spread the music throughout the house and not confuse anyone in case you play music with a wide stereo field. Some recordings (especially from the 60s and 70s) place certain instruments fully in one channel and not in the other. This may cause you to hear some of your music quite differently than you're used to.
Though it doesn't sound like you're going to do so, I wouldn't use those speakers for any kind of home theater. If you're going to set up a home theater, you'll want to buy or assemble a different system that's far more directional in nature.
