Is there a huge difference between current 1.2 hdmi standard and the future 1.3 hdmi standard?

Well, the HDMI 1.3 version allows for audio (up to 7.1 surround) and video (up to 1080p resolution). As far as it becoming a standard for HDTV and audio gear, as far as I know, it has not yet been determined. However, it may not be too far off since that digital broadcasting is scheduled to become mandatory in February 2009.

Wider color gamut (provided it is supported by the TV panels)
More colors (provided they are supported by the TV)
Additional digital audio formats (provided they are supported by the AV receiver)
1.3 hdmi is useless unless both the transmit device and the received device support those extra features.
HDMI recommends: don't ask if you have 1.3 or 1.2, but ask for specific features. If those features are meaningless to you, then 1.2 is good enough i think the next line of recievers will be 1.3..the difference is not relavent, if you use a 1.3 with as 1.2 it will not work
