The only people to benefit from them are the pimps who sell them. I will answer your question on the point of view of an engineer:
Cables play a very important role in the transfer of audio and video (sound and sight), or any digital data from one source to their point or points of destination. Therefore, quality is of utmost important especially if you are dealing with sophisticated equipment or high-end. I am specifically referring to the quality of the optical medium itself, but NOT the connectors. Any decently made connector can do the job as they merely connect the ends of the cable.
Hence, a 24K gold connector for an optical cable is as effective as any connector of good quality.
I believe that producers of these cables merely want to impress upon their well-off customers that if you have money to burn, then go for gold. no point. My guess is the same advantage as they have with 24 Karat RCA jacks & headphone plugs. The gold surface reduces the insertion force when connecting them. somebody's gotta milk your wallet. welcome to the dairy.
and when we can't get anymore milk from you, it's off to the slaugherhouse. you dont. just get some good connectors and you wont be able to tell the difference.
