What's wrong with my VCR?
We have a relatively new VCR. Today it chewed a tape then when I tried another it played for about 3 seconds then stopped itself. It's doing this with all my tapes. Why is it switching the play mode off? Is it something my husband can fix easily or is it a techie call out?

They are outdated now,go buy a DVD Recorder! it could be that the drive belt came alose or broke its a relative simple fix but can be complicated as to how its buried under everything Most models of consumer electronics are trash...doesn't matter the make, model, or price you paid.
It will generally cost you more to repair most consumer (or commercial) electronics than it will to buy a new one...sad 'aint it.
In any case, try calling the consumer line that was included with your warranty information.
The only real idea I have is that your tapes may be wound too tightly. If you've Fast Forwarded / Rewound your tapes alot this can happen. Not all the time on all models, but it can occur (has to do with stretching the tape). Sounds like it might have a broken gear if not check idler arm might be getting caught this means open up your vcr about three to four screws that hold the cover on insert tape and watch if an arm pulls the tape over it's on the left side if that does work it could be a bad belt or lose one or weak pully hope this helps you. Any VCR you buy today is junk. I don't mean to sound rude in the least. There are tons of moving parts and think, that tape has to go around all those gears. One old tape or well used tape that has been rewound to tight is all it takes to throw the whole machine off. I have to agree, you need to get a DVD player. It's a bummer losing your whole collection of VHS, but just think by the time you buy your DVD player HD DVD and BlueRay will have already made the the DVD player obsolete. I got a solution, just go out and buy one of each a HD DVD and BlueRay player. Then you will be ahead of the game! Depends on how far are you willing to go fix the problem.
What is happening is that for some reason your tape is not advancing and is getting stuck, causing the machine to shut down.
So you are going to have to take of the cover and see what is causing your problem.
VCRs are so cheap right now that it might be easier and cheaper to replace it.
