What's wrong with my DVD player?

I have a 3 disc RCA DVD player/home theater system, and have had it for a good 4 years. Within the last two months, it has increasingly not been able to play certain DVDs...I try to play them, but after awhile, it's spits the disc out and says 'Disc Error'. I know there is nothing wrong with the DVDs as they are brand new and all Region 1. I have never has this problem before, except with my Playstation 2, but that's not even the same company! It aggrivates me so very much! Any help?

Yes... Could be either the laser lens needs cleaning... or (most likely) the unit is just dying.

Sad truth is... most optical disk players have a pretty short life span compared to other electronics. They are very precise, use some tiny, delicate parts and any part or adjustment that drifts even slightly off spec will cause the unit not to function (most times not read disks well). Repairs can cost as much as buying a new unit and can be botched. For that reason I always buy "stand-alone" CD or DVD players. Buying a CD or DVD player that is combined with other electronics (home theater receiver, television, etc...), you are almost guaranteed to be stuck with a partially working unit in time. Have you tried cleaning the lens? You can buy a DVD lens cleaning kit for around $10 to $15 at most stores. you need to takeit in and get it cleaned, it sounds like the lazer diode is dirty! Most dvd players use a plastic track for the laser to move on. When this warps (and it will over time) due to internal heat, you're going to see disc errors. You can either try to find someone who can fix it inexpensively, or buy a new player. Bill is the most correct here. This same thing happened to my player and I had to replace it. My reccmendation would be purchase a high end unit next time with harder plastic, or metal slide rails. This is definantly the culprit if it will play for a bit and then spit it out. The farther out it goes on the warped rails the harder it is for it to read until it just cant anymore.
