What's so special about blue ray discs?
All I know is that it plays good quality movies but why does that make it so expensive?

The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.
As with any new technology the first generation of products will likely be quite expensive due to low production volumes. However, this shouldn't be a problem for long as there is a wide range of Blu-ray related products (players, recorders, drives, writers, media, etc) planned, which should help drive up production volumes and lower overall production costs. Once mass production of components for Blu-ray products begins the prices are expected to fall quickly. I belive its the large capacity they are able to hold. The cost per BluRay disc is considerably more expensive than a DVD in manufacturing, therefore the movies are going to be considerably expensive in a store.
The special qualities of a BluRay is that it can store up to 50GB, which is 5 times more than a dual-layer DVD movie. The extra capacity will allow you to store 1080p resolution movies and higher quality sound. A standard DVD holds up to 9.4GB and can only store up to 2 hours worth of 480p video.
Prices will come down, but BluRay has only been around for less than 6 months. Be patient and BluRay DVD players and discs will be as cheap as the standard DVD's. It will probably take 2 years or more though.
