What is the ideal place to put a subwoofer?

I recently purchased Logitech X-230 speakers, which contain 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer. Is it okay to place the subwoofer on a carpet? Will a carpet diminish the sound quality? What is the ideal surface for a subwoofer?

With that sub it really doesn't matter. Placement will not determine sonic quality. But some general rules to observe are to not place it on a fully reflective surface meaning a shelf or a material that has a natural frequecy that would be generated by the sub, if this is unavoidable then use a DSP to eliminate the frequency from the signal path as well as 2 harmonics above and below that freq.

But given the quality of the sub you purchased and the cost of DSPs etc, you will have cabinet issues, cable issues,etc. In your case you may want to try several ways to compensate for these issues including adding no resonate weight to the sub. A once refexing surface is best for sub performance. a subwoofer is ment to be placed anywhere because it is a subwoofer the sound is going to sound better the closer to the ground subs have no directional qualitys so you can set it anywhere really I would suggest putting it on bare floor away from the walls the far corner of the room is the best. Don't put the sub in the back of the room because you'll get a boomy sound. To integrate a subwoofer properly into a system you should place the sub at the same end of the room as the main speakers.To make the bass less directional and blend better you need to cross it over at a low frequency and ideally use a pair of subs.The subwoofer should have three spikes on the base of the enclosure.This isolates it from the floor and helps to prevent vibration along the floor.It also dissipates structural vibration of the sub itself and because the weight of the subwoofer enclosure is heavy sitting on three small points the enclosure cannot move when the speaker is pumping out the sound.If you sit the sub on a piece of foam it is easy to move when the speaker is vibrating back and forth the whole box wants to move also and when that happens the bass will be distorted. in the corner of the room is the best sitting on the floor. carpet doesnt matter. hope that helps. As to the physical placement in the room, it should be located near the main speakers 1/3 rd. the distance from the corner of any wall you choose along the wall.

Overall, place it anywhere you like as long as you like the sound coming from it.
