What is the difference between Dolby and DTS.?

They are 2 different standards for encoding surround sound information. I would probably say that most people think DTS is better. However, I doubt most people could tell how one was encoded. Most receivers can play both. Most DVDs are Dolby Digital since it is generally cheaper.

Unfortunately the second answer is incorrect. Dolby digital can have anywhere from 6 - 9 channels encoded. this is either 5 speakers and a sub up to 7 speakers and a sub. What answer 2 is referring to is Dolby Pro-logic. This is where the receiver takes in a stereo signal, left and right only no center, and tries to synthesize a 5.1 system out of it. Dolby Digital has the sound encoded, and when played gives 3 distinct channels, left,center,right and possibly a synthesised rear channel of sound.

DTS (Digital Theatre Sound) has at least 6 signals encoded to give 6 distinct channels of sounds hwne played back. left front, left rear, center,right rear, right front and subwoofer.

DTS is preferred as it gives the more realistic sound s, lke you woudl experience at the theatre
