the brand that sounds best to you, quality in speakers is fairly consistent, you get what you pay for, but the sound is variable. You should go to a higher end stereo store that has a good speaker audition room and listen to a bunch of speakers. Bring your own music as theirs will sound good on everything. Make the decision and get the speakers. If you are cheap, you can make your selection then go home and buy them on the net. Try the Meadowlark Swift. It costs around $1200, though. You didn't specifiy the price range, but if you can afford it these are about the best you will find in this price range. Solid wood(ash) construction and great crossover sound. I still like Bose, but these are pretty damn good. Well it sounds like you're off to a good start by knowing a little bit about which speakers to avoid.
There are a lot of good speakers out there for 2-channel stereo as well as for home theater. Here are a few that I would recommend to put on your short list at various price levels (starting from the least expensive to the most expensive)...
