I always see advertisements about buying a movie on dvd or blu-ray disc. What is it and do you need a special player?

Yes, unfortunately, you would need a new, and VERY expensive Blu-Ray player for these high-definition DVDs.
The good news is: you don't have to buy the Blu-Ray version of the movie, because the standard-definition version is ALSO available.
HOWEVER, for about $150 (or less even!) you can buy a DVD player that "up-converts" your existing DVDs to what comes close (but is definitely not) high definition video.
These cool new generation (regular) DVD players will also play MP3 discs and more. They take the video from your regular DVDs and kind of "polish it up" - to make it look tons better than just playing them on a regular old DVD player.
THE CATCH IS: you have to at least have an HD-ready TV to do this on. Using either an HDMI or component video cable hooked up between the TV and the upconverting player will result in great looking movies - so much better than the old way that you might realize that you really don't have to spend the top dollar on the Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) system just yet.
Enjoy! It's a high definition movie that you can play on HDTV's. It's Sony's version of the next generation movie disk (they are also used in Playstation 3 games). The picture is much better than a DVD and you will need a separate player for them.
