Before DVDs, there used to be these things called VCRs. One type was VHS, the other was a smaller VCR called BETA... they used smaller tapes. Like a Beta max? It is a typr of video player that was out in the 80's but the vhs player became more popular as it was cheaper! Beta is an ancient type of Video player, like 8 track. It is also a program that is in trial period. Actually beta is the second alphabet in the great language... comes after alpha.. It's an old video format (a.k.a. Betamax),
at least as old as VHS, but it didn't take off like
the VHS format. Check out the history on Wikipedia... Beta is a type (format) of video tape. It was invented by Sony back in the early days of video tape as a competitor to VHS. Most of the other manufacturers of consumer video tape players and recorders used the VHS standard and Beta fell out of use in the consumer market. However, it had become somewhat of a standard in the professional arena. Many Television stations still use Beta tapes to record and edit with. Betamax... I grew up with a Betamax player. There was even a Beta video rental store in the little town I lived in. When VHS took off, new release movies took longer and longer to come out on Beta tapes and the store went under. For about 5 years there though, my parents held out hope and refused to buy a VHS (even though we had one of the first 5 disc CD changers Sony ever made). Like Mac and PC is today... Beta was a better quality image but it was merely the underdog with a relatively small market share. The BETA version of something (anything, especially software) is a test version (still testing in the moment of the release). Beta was a different format for VCR . At one time there were two formats the popular VHS and Beta.
