Blu Ray is a DVD like device that relies on a blue laser instead of of a red laser to read data. Since blue light is smaller wavelength, it allows the micro pits that encode the information to be much smaller, and blue-ray disks permit up to 25 G per layer, and 200 G total has been demonstrated by TDK last summer, as opposed to about 5 G for current DVD (that use red laser).

The big fuss is that current DVD do not have the capacity for a feature length movie in high definition; and the fact that another, presently incompatible format called HD-DVD is also trying to gain support, so there is a format war going on even as the first Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are barely being released.
