What exactly is an optical audio port?
What is this weird port with the red light inside of it, on the side of my laptop, and how is it different from a normal audio jack, with no fancy light? I know it's used as an audio jack, and I currently have speakers plugged into it that work fine, but I was wondering if there was any technical difference/advantage to standard audio jacks without the red light, and if so, what they are.

Althought the two post above answer your question, Comparing the "red light port" to normal gold audio connectors is like comparing a CD to a cassette tape. One is analog, the other is digital (optical red light). There are enormous differences. For one. normal audio signals are "stereo" meaning only two channels (left & right). Fiber optic connections can carry at least 5.1 channels (6 channels, left, right, center, rear left, rear right, subwoofer). Also yes they are immune to interference but not just humming. Virtually all problems with analog sound (humming, distortion, signal loss, quality) are eliminated. The sound never touched the "real world" never exposed to any electrical interference producing the cleanest sound you ever heard. (Its the only type of connection that you can turn your system all the way up and hear no noise at all.. Unheard of in the analog world. Of course COAX digital will give you the same results, but I like optical better. ;) The optical digital port carries a 5.1 audio signal, so if you wanted to hook up a surround system it's easier and has the optimal sound quality.
(It will also work fine with 2.0 stereo) Optical audio is the equivilent of digital coaxial audio. It is just another way of transporting digital audio, by using light. It is useful if you have sources of audio interference (hummm) in the home, optical cables are immune to most types of interference. Digital audio is superior to analog in that the original pure audio signal is preserved digitally until the very last leg of the system, the amplifier/speakers. An analog output needs to "dumb down" the audio into an analog form before it gets used.
