What does it mean when the DVD player says protection then turn right off?.?

Normally this is an issue with Sony products, and when I say issue, its more of a protective feature that they have. Some other brands do this as well, and normally it is from small surges, or spikes in power, but normally this happens on receivers not DVD players. Couple of things to try: Unplug the unit for a few hours, then try again. Try a different outlet on the surge protector or somewhere else in the house (that outlet could be bad or receiving inconsistent power). Call the 1800 support line for the manufacturer and ask if they have a reset code for the unit - this is typically done by pressing a few of the buttons on the face of the DVD player itself, which will reset the DVD player. If none of those work, then it is probably time for a new player, because repairs are as much as a new unit. I hope this helps. it's dirty, or that you've been had by the guy on the corner that you bought it from. Check the connections on the back, sometimes but rare if the connectors are touching each other they will short out the system. I know Sony has this function built in.
