What does "calibration" refer to?
When someone says "this projector has been calibrated", does it mean they have adjusted the basic controls such as brightness and contrast, or does this mean something more advanced, and if so what?

The premier video calibration would be an ISF calibration. The Image & Science Foundation educates and certifies technicians to perform calibrations that are nothing short of amazing. They use expensive equipment and make adjustments within factory menus not available to consumers. Expect to pay approximately $300 for a Standard Definition calibration and an additional $200 for High Definition calibration. (Two separate calibrations are required for High Definition Video displays – both standard and high definition adjustments).
It’s possible someone could claim their projector was calibrated when they used a DVD such as “Digital Video Essentials”. Joe Kane clearly states his “Digital Video Essentials” DVD optimizes video displays. The DVD is definitely worthwhile and recommended for those not wanting to spend the money for ISF calibration. It’s only $19 from Amazon.
My High Definition set has been ISF calibrated and typically just explain it’s been professionally “calibrated” when asked why the picture is so incredible. When referring to a projector it can be either basic settings that can be adjusted in the menu, or if the picture is poor or out of focus and you can't fix it from the standard menu, then someone needs to get into the "service menu" of the device to reset the system or make some internal menu based repairs.
