Both have advantages and disadvantages. Will one be a hands down winner? Who knows. The fact that blockbuster backs Blu Ray really isn't doing the damage that most think. For one you can still get HD DVD through their Blockbuster mail services so this only applies to blockbuster storefronts. Overall whether it's blu ray or HD DVD this only makes up less than 1% of blockbusters walk in business so concluding that blu ray will win because of this is a delusion.
2 years ago sony and toshiba were talking and walked away from the table but the word is that they are ready to conclude talks once again to try and merge the 2 technologies together. Clearly if this happens everybody wins if not were back to one or the other. As for which is better? Go check them out. You can enter into HD DVD for less than $300.00 and Sony will have to drop it's prices to compete with that. Most people along with wanting the latest technology also are price concious byers. To say that one is better than the other today... You can't! HD's cheaper! beta Blu-ray.
As far as quality, they're basically the same, but a blu-ray does have more capacity.
HD-DVD only has one movie studio that solely makes HD-DVD. All the rest either make only blu-ray or both formats. Target and Blockbuster also said that they're primarily backing blu-ray, so I think the writing is on the wall that HD-DVD is going to lose. I don't have either yet, but I'm hoping Blu-Ray wins out in the format battle. It has a lot more capacity, which will make it a longer lasting technology, I believe. Also, last time I checked, Blu-Ray had more backers in the industry. beta-max or VHS what do you like better? ohh damn its not the 80's but its the same question. damn those electronic companys and they're clever marketing. they've done it to us twice. neither because it forces you to use HDMI. I am going to wait for the new format buzzing around the high end forums.
I think the blu ray Hd DVD issue will be like DAT tapes and 8 tracks. Out dated and unsupported by the masses.
