What did I do wrong?

I bought a new dvd player for my old tv in my basement. It came with the white, red, and yellow hook-up cable which I hooked up and I plugged the DVD player in to the outlet.

I also have a VCR hooked up to the tv in which I didn't touch, and I do not have cable hooked up to this tv.

The tv was already on video, so that wasn't the problem. When I put a DVD in the player, I didn't get a picture or sound.

What did I do wrong or miss? I can't remember how it was all hooked up before. My tv does have an S video hook-up, do I need to do that?

Answer:

The S-video (SVHS) will give you a noticeably better picture, so go get an S-VHS cable, they're cheap and worth the price. It carries audio as well as video. The TV also monitors the SVHS input and will switch to it automatically if you turn on your DVD, which is terribly convenient.

It sounds like you just have to switch to the correct Video In channel on your TV, the one you're using now is usually called Composite input. Sometimes you switch between the different Video In channels by pressing (several times, perhaps) the 0 (Zero) key on your remote. Or a dedicated Video In key if there is one. I also have an older tv with a vcr and dvd connected and I did it like this: The red, white, and yellow from the DVD are plugged into the VCR's IN connection. The VCR's OUT (red, white, yellow) are connected to the TV's rear IN connection. When I want to watch a DVD, I use the VCR's remote control to select the INPUT and make sure the TV is selected to the INPUT and it displays the DVD picture and sound on the TV. Hope that helps! Your TV has multiple video inputs (video 1, video 2, etc). Check the TV menu and slelct the proper input. VCR's usually use channel 3 on older tv's. Is that the case on yours? On newer sets they use a video channel. DVD players always use a video channel. Check which inputs you're using on the back of the tv and turn on the corresponding channel on the tv. My guess is that you have the VCR hooked up with a coax cable and the DVD is hooked up to video 1, 2, or 3. Turn on the DVD player and check all your video channels.
