What causes AC humm in Speakers? I connected my PC line out to the line in of my theatre system.?
I had a 5.1 surround sound system and now a RCA theatre System with a "line in" jack and i get an AC humm in each of them when connected to my PC. What causes this and how do I stop it?
Answer:
There's a ground loop that it sounds like your computer is causing. Plug your computer and your home theater into grounded outlets and this should solve the problem.

_ First try to connect all your equipment to one heavy duty, surge protected power source.Although this is the ideal way, most likely it's not practical and may still not completely eliminate the audio ground loop you obviously have.
A second surefire way is to purchase a "line level" audio isolation device available at most auto sound stores or maybe from your friendly Radio Shack. You will also probably need a "mini-tell"stereo to RCA plugs cable that connects your computer's line out jack to the adapter box. From the box you use a standard RCA stereo cable to your receivers audio input. The hum will be gone! Enjoy the music. We run across this a lot when dealing with corporate AV presentations. The majority of the problems can be traced back to the PC's power supply. If you are using a laptop, disconnect the AC adapter and go on batteries for a few minutes. If the hum goes away, more than likely it's your power supply. If it is a desktop computer, you don't have a lot of options. There is a new device out there that actually is a digital to analog converter that plugs into a spare USB port and decodes the digital audio stream into stereo RCA plugs. That might also work. Also, check your "mini line in cable and make sure it's not a headphone cable. It should be a shielded cable.
