Want to upgrade my cheap DVD player. Like the Sony RDRHXD-860 but is it worth waiting for Blu-ray?

Fed up of poor quality from existing DVD player. Like the Sony with the hard drive although I do have Sky+ already so can I assume that I can use the hard drive on the DVD recorder as additional space to my Sky+ and record DVDs from recordings from both?

Main question is how long will it be for the new Blu ray technology to become truly affordable and would I waste my ￡300 on the Sony DVD recorder now when potentially in 6 months time, Blu ray could be down to say the ￡500 mark?

Saying that, can existing DVD's be played on Blueray or would I have to replace my whole collection?

Yes, you should be able to burn DVDs from your Sky+ box by connecting a DVD recorder to it.

On BluRay, it's going to take a while before GOOD players come down to ￡500 levels, as the technical gubbins that go into them are still quite expensive. Saying that, there will be the release of the PS3 for ￡425 in March 2007. Despite the other answer you CAN play DVDs on BluRay machines, and the player should "upscale" them too (output them in pseudo HD). My advice however would be to wait at least 12 - 18 months before committing to BluRay (or HD DVD) as it's really not clear which format will prevail. You don't want to start building a new library in one of the new formats, only to find out it will have a stunted shelf-life. blu ray is a completely different format to DVD, yes you would have to replace your DVD collection, or maybe buy an expensive adaptor, any way don't buy it yet wait to see which format (blu ray / HDDVD) come out on top of the brand wars its another VHS versus BETA give it 6 months to a year then decided You can play your current DVD collection on most blu-ray players at an up-converted resolution, but the quality of the scaler in most players is mediocre at best. A better investment right now is a $350 (US) standard DVD player that has a MUCH better scaler for your current collection. Denon and Pioneer Elite both offer such players. You will need an HDMI connection to get up to and including 1080p resolution up-conversion. Blu-ray and HD-DVD can fight it out for the next five years for all I care unless they put better scalers in their players. At twenty to thirty bucks a pop for next generation DVDs, it's too expensive to start over until one format wins out. At least wait until HD-DVD players have the ability to output a 1080p signal. Both format discs are the same resolution and it is unfair to compare the quality until they can be seen side by side @ 1080p.
