WHy cant I get sound from my surround speakers?

I purchased a Surround Sound DVD Home Theater System and I get surround sound (From all 5 speakers) when I play a DVD or listen to the built in AM/Fm or play a CD but when I get the audio signal from my new HDTV I can only get the sound from the 3 front speakers. Nothing but a him comes from the 2 rear speakers. I have my TV set to external and on stereo and my Home theater system set to surround but nothing. Is there maybe something I am missing. I am new to surround sound. I know the speakers are hooked up and work as they work with the built in stuff its just with the external device (my HDTV) .

Refer to your owner's manual. You should only have to adjust your receiver's surround sound settings for the fix. Make sure all of your speaker connections are secure and your low-level connections are in the multi-channel receiver terminals.

_ use a digtal audio cable OK a couple of questions to answer your question. First of all who is your TV provider? Comcast? Charter? Directv? Dish? other? Do you use a decoder box? (do you have a piece of equipment that you change the channel through) Is the aforementioned decoder an HD box? If you don't have a box then you will not get much sound out of your rears. The rear speakers only fire when they have sounds sent to them. The only way to do that is to have a show that is recorded in 5.1 Dolby digital, and to have a box which supports this. If you have that then you can use a digital cable (optical) to run the sound from your box to your home theater receiver. Which will then decode the sound appropriately and send the sound to the rear speakers. You may be able to set up your receiver to Dolby PRO LOGIC which can simulate surround sound on TV broadcasts but it will not be as distinct as a DVD. Most Television programs are not in surround sound anyway, only the HD programs are recorded that way. Or you may try to use a 5 channel stereo mode which will mirror the sound from your front speakers to your back. Not the same as true surround sound but you may find it better. Hope this helps!! It might be as simple as telling your SURROUND SYSTEM to play 5 speakers instead of 2 speakers when you switch to AM/FM or CD...A lot of home theaters keep track of how many speakers you want playing on EACH input...I know you said that 3 speakers are playing but I'll bet the CENTER speaker's not on either. If there is a setting on the remote to adjust your sound, like one that says " Hall ", or " Party ". I use one of those if I am just watching TV, but, if I watch A DVD with surround sound & dolby, i use the surround setting. I had to frig with mine too so all 5 speakers work on just TV viewing.
