Video Upconversion question?

if i add a progressive scan dvd player to a hd set top box, will the stb upconvert the signal to 1080i? (Assuming that the connections are made with component/HDMI)

Some DVD players with HDMI will upscale the Standard-Definition Content to 1080i for you - so passing it thru the STB should result in no change to the resolution of the video - it would just go HDMI in to the STB and HDMI out. Otherwise it's not likely to upscale and convert from Analog to HDMI.

If your DVD player has analog Component Progressive-scan video it is not allowed to upscale the analog output (Per DVD-CCA Rules) beyond the resolution which it was originally authored (720x480 or 480P)

so then your analog progressive 480p output being sent into the STB would go out the HDMI as 480p - though some STB's may upconvert from analog 480P to HDMI at 1080i, it's not likely at this time. The DVD player 480p analog output could have Copy Protection on it and the STB would have to preserve that info as it converted to HDMI, which would require an HDCP (Hi Definition Content Protection) capable HDMI output and most boxes won't do that and upscale your video resolution.
