Trying to use an IR (infared extender)?

I have purchased several IR extenders to use in my family room. Basically my cable box and stereo our not in "line of sight" for the remote to work. I have tried a couple of different IR extenders and they seem to work if I am 1-5 feet from the extender, but further back the signal will not transmit through the extender to the cable boxe or stereo. All of these extenders claim to have a 50 foot radius. Is it possible that something else in my house could be causing interference? I have a wireless network and cordless phones in the house. Would those cause interference?

The most common problems with ir systems are a room is too bright. Natural sun light contains ir so it can flood your pickup, put in new batteries in your remote, and check to make sure the flashers are on the right spots on the equipment. You can check usually in the manuals or a bright flashlight. Some equipment dosent like having the flasher right on the sensor though it floods it so try moving it around to see where it responds the best. turn off the computers and phones, and anything that uses rf. Normally, computer networking shouldn't be causing any problems. Is there any flourescent lighting or direct sunlight in the room? Either will effect IR performance. Have you verified that the wiring supporting your IR kit (sensor, hub, and flasher) is correct? If it's not lighting issues, and wiring seems OK, you might need to upgrade to a better IR kit.
