The subwoofer of my home theater is not working, so there is no sound.?

Can I just replace the subwoofer or I need to replace the whole system?

You need to determine that it is the powered subwoofer as

opposed to the connection to the subwoofer that is the problem.

If it worked before on exactly the same connection and you

haven't made any control adjustments on the sub itself, then it's

probably the sub.

Then you have to determine if its the amp on the sub or just the

subwoofer driver. You may want to take it to a trained technician

to find out the problem in this case.

Then you can go to Parts Express and source either woofers

and/or plate amplifiers and replace what is needed. If it's too

expensive to repair, then you might want to just get a new sub

and sell the one you have as-is.

_ It might be the sub-woofer itself...it might be the wiring, it might be just that portion of your surround sound amplifier, bad binding posts, etc. etc.

Have the system tested by a qualified technician...it won't take long to troubleshoot, and will be well-worth the effort and a few bucks for the test. This happend to my father. Check for plastic covering the hole. The protective covering the factory puts on keeps it from working properly. If it is not that, check your manual for the receiver to make sure you have it on the correct settings for surround sound, if it is set on the music setting, it may not use the subwoofer, depending on brand. If it still isn't working, try hooking it up to something else that uses a subwoofer, such as a friends system. This way, you will know if it is the connection or the subwoofer itself. If you don't want to pay for someone to check it out, and you think it's shot anyway, open it up and see if you can sodder a loose connection back together. Only do this if it is past warranty, and you have tried everything else first, you could easily break it past repair, and you void any warranty if you open it yourself. First off you need to determine which part in fact is the faulty component. Is this a powered sub? if so you can plug in a differnt input to it to see if it is working. Any regular analog audio will get some sound to the powered sub.
