Surround sound setup...Help needed and comments?

I have a few questions to ask i have this amp and the only way to connect it to something is by using the red and white connecter but the thing is that they are male connections on the amp and the amp has no volume control so i need to hook it up to a reciver for it to have volume control... my reciver has outputs but hey dont have volume control... i need to have a way to hook up the amp to the reciver so there is volume control and you can hear sound coming out of the system...

also the sound system is in a big room i need to know wah tkind of setup is best to go with...

What 'Opus' said plus, it depends on whether you are talking about 5.1 or 7.1 surround.

Unless your AV receiver is set up for that, you are dead in the water. The 5.1 system requires 5 speaker and a sub woofer, the 7.1 needs 2 more speakers than that.

My Pioneer receiver has a built in balancing system, that allows me to check each speaker pair and the sub woofer for volume and quality of sound sequentially.

If your receiver is older than about 7 years, and sound is important to you, you may want to think about a new receiver

I have owned surround systems for over 20 years. Don't use the regular speaker outputs from your receiver. Use the "pre-out" connections. That will give you full volume and tone controls from the receiver but will bypass the receiver's amp and allow you to use the separate amp. If your receiver does not have pre-out connections, you should not try to use a separate amp - just connect your speakers to the receiver. your receiver should have a volume control, otherwise it's not a receiver. you should connect your amp with rca cables, or if your receiver and amp have them, balanced inputs.

As far as the sound system in a big room you should go with something that you think sounds good and has a high sensitivity (spl) rating so it can play louder without distortion. Check out some klipsch systems. Go to either Crutchfieldadvisor.com or THX.com
