Surrond sound system wires (square ends) won't fit my DVD player (circular holes)?
I have a surround sounds system complete with a horrible DVD player. I want to use the speakers with my old but nice DVD player, but the wires connecting the speakers to the DVD player don't fit. The speaker wires have a square end and my DVD player has round holes. Can I get an adaptor?
Answer:
Most DVD players don't have speaker outputs. I'm guessing the "round holes" you're talking about are RCA plugs. Without knowing the brand of the devices you're talking about, my guess and advice is that you need to connect your DVD to a receiver (a seperate unit that often controls your DVD player, CD player, radio, etc.). Your speaker wire AND TV will also connect to your receiver and you should be in business. would be nice to know what brand of devices you are talking about for comparison.
are you sure your new dvd player has speaker connections ? Chances are that you will have to plug the audio out from your older DVD player into the audio in on your home theater in a box. You will then have to switch sourse on the home theater system that you have to the auxilary input which you just plugged the separate DVD player into, I.E. if the unit has a DVD input, plug it in there and set the home theater system to DVD in.
If you can use optical cables or a digital coax or you're not getting Dolby Digital surround sound.
If there are no inputs, I'm afraid you're likely out of luck as even if you were to buy a separate receiver, the speakers are probably something like a Sony or a Panasonic which function at weird impedances like 2.7 ohms. On the back of the speakers, check and see if they have a little number with a horseshoe next to them. If they say eight or six, then you can buy a new receiver. If it's four, you're on the cusp. If it's a lower and weird number, I'm afraid you're out of luck. If it's a Bose and doesn't have any of these numbers, you're done.
If you do end up having to buy new equipment, a rule of thumb is to never buy anything that has the DVD player that's built in with the receiver. Normally, units like Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, and some Pioneers are pretty good. Try and go with separate components next time as any time you can go with separate speakers, a separate subwoofer, a separate amplifier, and a separate DVD player, you'll always get better performance than you would from buying a pre-packaged unit and you won't run into these types of problems.
