Speaker specialists, a conditioning question please?
I have a set of Bose speakers, the are the 901 series 2. They were purchased back in the 70's brand new and were never abused and look brand new. However, I am worried about the speakers themselves about the dryness, humidity etc., that could have happened over the years. I have not used them since about 1980. I wanted to check them out but there is no way for me to look at them without removing the cloth, therefore tearing it all off. Is there such thing as speaker conditioning? And what do I do or who do I call? I there a product and how do I use it with the cloth on over the speakers? I would hate to start them up and they crack on me. This is when Bose made real speakers. There is eight of them in the back and one in the front of each speaker. How can I condition these speakers before checking them out again? I remember reading that they could handle up to 400 watts before blowing, and I never came near that. They were used at that time at 125 watts per channel. Thanks.

I own a set of 802s. Short of removing the cloth and looking at them, you can plug them in and listen to them. Short of that I don't know of any way to look at the speakers themselves. There are replacement foam surrounds for the 901 speakers that are relatively inexpensive so, if they are shot it's not a total loss. Even if you have to replace some speakers I would hold onto them. Wow, I dreamt of having Bose 901 II more than 30 years ago and not able to pucrhase that set since the price is $750
