most of us here have given a good argument on why not to buy a blu ray player...just not right now.... Wait and see which format becomes popular Blu Ray or HD DVD!
Moreover, there is a good chance that some manufacturer's will come out with a DVD player that will play both formats (a combo/universal drive).

Sony is famous for bringing out technologies that fail. Remember the mini discs they tried a few years back? yes as soon as it comes out then tell me back that how it is or may i buy this or not No. Sony is famous for bringing out technological formats that don't catch on.
For example, the Betamax format was Sony's. Everybody agreed that it was superior to the VHS. Sony jacked up licensing fees for Beta, whereas VHS was an open source standard. Therefore, Beta went bye-bye.
Wait until we find out what format will still be here for a while. No - I wouldn't expect blueray or HDDVD to take over the DVD market. Both will probably exist like SA-CD and DVD-Audio do for the CD market. Niche markets, but didn't replace the CD market.
