Should I get an LCD or Plasma big screen TV?

I would like to get a 50" or so flat panel HDTV. It will almost always be used at night, when it is dark, will not be used for video games, or watching sports. Mostly HD-DVD movies and cable.

I get conflicting stories from the sales reps at best buys, so I am looking for a more informed perspective.

Cost is not an issue - willing to spend upto 4K....

Before buying a Plasma, if that is the way you go, insure there is someone in your local area that repairs them. If there is not then they must send them out of town. This is one of the number one issues I have read (Consumer Reports) about Plasma big screens. Here where I live one must be sent over 300 miles and that is enough to make me change my mind and go LCD. LCD it has higher quality picture

and they last longer as well

i wouldn't get a rear projection as certain images can be "burned" (for lack of better word) on the screen and the bulbs cost about ￡100 and depending on size there is more than one. Because the room is not too bright, I would definitely say plasma. LCD only beats plasma in rooms with much light. An LCD has a much high quality picture and the television generally has a better life time. Look into an LCD projection...they have just a bulb that when it goes out, you just replace it and you're good to go.

A plasma sacrifices quality for the size. Unless you are in dire need of more room, a plasma is not the way to go. Plus, they have a limited life time...once they go out, they are done for. I worked at a school and used a projector.
