Should I get a Home Theater System with HDMI upscaling?

I have a 50" Plasma TV with HDMI support. Should I get a Home Theater System with HDMI support? or the regular Audio/Video ports will be sufficient?

Go with the latest technology if you have access to it.

If high resolution is not a priority to you, then the regu-

lar connections are fine, but if you want HDTV quality

then you might as well use what's available to you by

going with the HDMI feature.

I bought an upconverting toshiba DVD player with HDMI cable and it was only $60

your TV source(satellite or cable) should also use HDMI, it is uncompressed digital signal which is better than an analog signal that has to be converted.

since you already spent the big money on the TV, you should get video inputs for it that can utilize it fully. Completely unnecessary with your tv. The plasma tv already has to upconvert the dvd signal to its native resolution (likely 768p). The only technical advantage is in carrying a digital signal from player to tv, but the dvd player's upscaling circuitry is likely to do a worse job than the tv's anyway, so the advantage there is lost (unless you spend a great deal of money on a top of the line dvd player).

Save your money to buy/rent movies. If you only have one HDMI input, then I would use it on HD cable or satellite. For audio, you would be using an optical audio cable for surround sound. As of now, most people are using HDMI for video and not audio.

If already have a surround sound receiver without HDMI, I would not recommend in buying a new one to have HDMI support. If you are in need for a new one, then yes buy one that at least has HDMI switching. If you want to spend a little more money, then buy one that supports HDMI upconverting.
