Looking to buy a big TV, looking at the projector TV's (the VCR sized boxes that project a huge screen on a wall or pull down screen.) How are the pictures with these compared to regular TV's HD or plazmas, LCD, ect? Looking to use one in a family room that has several windows with a decent amount of light during day. Does room have to be dark for a good picture? How long do the projectors last? What amount of Lumens is recommended for a good picture? About how much would I have to spend for a decent projector without going overboard? Anyone have any suggestions as to brands or Models? thank you for any help. I have very little knowledge of these projectors; any and all info is appreciated.

The lil box is call "front projector"
the Panasonic AE700 should be good enough for normal use and is not that expensive. Try getting something that can process High definition signal so it will be at least future prove as newer and coming DVD (HD-DVD, Blu-Ray) will be on High Definition
Please get the home theater projector and not those data projector as the colour seperation works differently between them.
The bulb (lamp) normally last around 3-6,000 hours... I will go through some basics for you. Ideally you want no light whatsoever in the room you are using a projector. Especially if you are going to be viewing during the day. As to lumens, the higher the lumens the brighter the picture, however there is a trade-off. The contrast ratio (the different stages between black and white) decreases. The contrast or 'grayscale' is truly the basis of quality picture. Depending on the quality of the piece, you can get much better quality than LCD/PLasma etc. Get the best picture/size that you can purchse without simply looking at size.
I personally would not spend any less than $4000 dollars on a quality projector, anything realistically lower than about $3500 is truly not going to perform. It will simply be a projector shooting an image. Bare in mind this price does not include a screen. A good screen would start at about $1000 dollars. Not the least expensive way, but it is worth it.
