Easily the best for the money. Onkyo makes the best home theater in a box systems (HTIB).
Pick up a Harmony universal remote. You log onto their website, pick your TV, HTIB, etc and it programs automatically. I have an Onkyo (HT-R3280) which I picked up for about $200 and I'm very happy with it. It is a little lacking in I/Os (only one optical and one coax digital audio, and only analog video), but it works fine for my setup. For $500, you should be able to get a higher end ONKYO that will suit your needs nicely.
