Hi-def vs. Blu Ray,,,what happens to those of us with a plain old DVD player?
I was just reading an aritcle on yahoo news that the DVD industry is getting to the point where certain releases will be in either only hi-def or blue ray. Spindreman 3 for example will be availbel in a blue ray format only while the latest Bourne film will be hi-def. At this point, we just have your basic DVD player, nothing fancy. Does this mean we wouldn't be able to watch these movies with the equipment we have? The article quoted the "dramatic drop" in prices for these new players..blue ray going for about $499 and hi def around $300, but these are still both way out of our family budget. Will we still be able to watch new movies in a few months or is my DVD player going to be the equivelent of a 2007 betamax by Christmas??

In that article, it is referring to movies coming out in a high-definition format, and the choices they make on which format to come out in. Some movies are released in the Blu-Ray format only, some are released in the HD-DVD format only, and some are released in both.
However, this does NOT mean that all of those movies will not be released in the regular DVD format as well. In other words, with the current DVD player you have, you will be able to watch all the future DVDs, such as Spiderman 3, as all movies are currently released in regular DVD format in addition to a high-definition format.
There is nothing to worry about for those of us who haven't purchased a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player yet. Regular DVD players and regular DVDs will be out and available for a long time, at LEAST for a few more years, because most people still have yet to purchase an HD TV.
