I have a home theather system (JVC th-c6) with a slightly different setup. All the surround speaker cables connect to the subwoofer and a single "system cord" connects the subwoofer to the receiver/dvd player. My receiver/dvd player just died and I need to get a new one. The problem is I would like to buy something that has this "system cord" so that I can keep all my speakers and powered subwoofer. Is the "system cord" hook up fairly common? The cord looks like a s-video cable. My manual calls this cable "system cable". Never seen this set-up in other home theater. Maybe common for HTIB (all in one type)?

The system you have is part of a "Home Theater in a Box" package. Meaning the speakers and all the components are tailored specifically for each other. The "system cable" is not an s-video cable, it is proprietary to JVC.
If you are trying for a replacement, the only option is a refurbished unit or getting the broken unit serviced. You can try an online auction site.
You will find that it will cost less to purchase a new complete system than investing in repairing the broken one. And the newer unit will have more bells and whistles for less than what you originally paid. The system cord is unique to JVC. You would have to purchase a JVC player to keep on using the same setup.
