Calling all dvd experts !!please help!!?

I have a 5.1 surround sound system on my old dvd player where the speakers plug straight into the back of the dvd player with red/black connection terminals but the dvd is broken,I would like to keep the surround sound as all my gear is linked to it but would like a dvd recorder.Would I be able to buy a dvd recorder and connect it to my old dvd player i.e. go through it and if so how would i connect it?The reason i ask is because I can't find any dvd recorders that have 5.1 output and therefore would use the old dvd basically as an amp as the dvd is broken like i said before.Any advice or other solutions appreciated.

If you have the Optical or Digital Coax connection for Dolby 5.1 then all you need is a player/recorder that has these outputs. Otherwise you need to replace the faulty parts, there is no other way, in order to achieve 5.1 you absolutely NEED digital connections. Most set top box's have at leasve one of these inputs and outputs. This is why all in one systems are not exactly always the best idea. if the dvd is broken then get a new one. it doesnt take a genius to figure that out Sadly not. you can only get 5.1 Through digital cables. There is no other way to carry them. Your old dvd player was made to get 5.1 without the need of an expensive surround kit. It converted the signal inside its self and output it from its own speaker terminals. Unless you find a new one with the same outputs you will have to buy a surround amp..Go to richer sounds. For less than 200quid you could get everything needed for a new setup. we are up to 7.1 now you know. 5.1 gear has been heavily tweaked over the last few years. A new setup now could be all you need for years. If you want the next gen of surround sound. HD surround! make sure your amp has HDMI connections..
