what technological difference does the original 'tivo' have compared to a 'dvr'?
why would you want a tivo compared to a dv-r? i started with a tivo but now have a dv-r and I dont see any difference in functionality...

The TiVo is much more sleak & stylish. You can transfer programs between TiVo's if you have multiple. You can purchase movie tickets online, listen to music from your computer, view photos stored on your computer or online. They are about to release software that will allow different users to transfer programs to one another (example - you forget to record a program and your buddy has it. He can send it to you via internet.) Those mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. A DVR does just what it says...records programs digitally. A Ford Focus goes from A to B just fine but it is much nicer to travel in a Cadillac Escalade. Hope this helps. I don't have Tivo but I've read that, for a subsrciption, you can record any program you like whichever channel it's on. For example, if you want Law and Order and it's on TNT and NBC, Tivo will record both, with no special effort on your part. You can also do this for any actor, director and other category you like. none you have to pay a service for both
