That all depends on the type of discs, and in many cases the brand of disc.
your recorder can write the following formats at the following maximum speeds:
DVD-RAM : 5x max
DVD-R : 16x max
DVD-R DL : 4x max
DVD-RW : 6x max
DVD+R : 16x max
DVD+R DL : 2.4x max
DVD+RW : 4x max
Depending on the quality of the discs you buy, and their compatibility with your recorder (not all discs/recorders are created equal) you might see, for example, -R discs rated for 16x burning only acheiving an average of 4x over the lenght of burning the full disc. This is absolutely normal.
I've never heard of any discs being problematic when being burnt at less than their rated speed, having said that.
Either way, your burner will burn pretty much any format, as fast as it's currently possible to burn those formats, given good media/player compatibility, so burn away, I'm sure you'll have no trouble.
